QUESTION: What was your career track prior to joining the SC SBDC network? ANSWER: I have worked in large corporations for 26 years. The last 22 years I have worked with startup companies and small businesses. I have worked with 10 startup companies directly where I was Vice President and have consulted with over 250 pre-startup and startup companies with the SBDC in Larimer County Colorado. QUESTION: What motivated you to become an SC SBDC consultant? ANSWER: I thoroughly enjoy working with and helping small businesses. In Larimer County I was a 1099 consultant seeing 3-5 clients a week. SC SBDC has given me the opportunity to see many more clients.

QUESTION: What is the best piece of advice you would offer aspiring business owners? ANSWER: Prepare your marketing plan and your cash flow plan with diligence. This is where most small businesses fail.

QUESTION: Do you have a particular area of interest/expertise that you offer clients? ANSWER: Being a small business owner, I offer insights as to how to be successful. I emphasize cash flow and a strong marketing plan.

QUESTION: Why is the SBDC an important resource for small business owners in South Carolina? ANSWER: Many people don't know what they don't know. We give them guidance on what is needed to be successful.

QUESTION: What is your favorite part about working for the SC SBDC? ANSWER: I really love the passion that small business owners have. This is contagious and I feed off of their enthusiasm.

QUESTION: What quote best expresses your philosophy toward work/life? ANSWER: A start up isn't a business, it is a lifestyle.

QUESTION: What is the greatest challenge you’ve had to overcome as a consultant? How did you overcome it? ANSWER: Some people are not a good fit to start a business. By suggesting that they develop a detailed marketing plan and cash flow plan they will usually understand their shortcomings. If they complete these plans, then I move forward with them.

QUESTION: What is your approach toward client counseling? ANSWER: Listen to what the client is saying to understand where I can make the greatest impact to help them.

I usually ask for them to prepare a marketing and cash flow plan. This helps them understand the requirements to run a business.

QUESTION: What awards have you won as an SC SBDC consultant? ANSWER: Client Achievement Award with the Larimer County Colorado SBDC.
